The Zambian Kwacha, introduced in 1968, derives its name from the Nyanja and Bemba word for “dawn,” symbolizing the new dawn of Zambia’s independence. One of the intriguing aspects of the Kwacha is its relationship with the regional wildlife. The Zambian government has made efforts to conserve its wildlife, and this is wonderfully reflected in the banknotes, which showcase Zambia’s rich biodiversity, including the African fish eagle, elephants, and buffalos.

In 2013, Zambia underwent a significant currency rebasing, which saw the Kwacha undergo a 1,000:1 denomination drop to simplify transactions and ease inflationary pressures. This move was a bold attempt to stabilize the economy and improve public confidence in the currency. Interestingly, Zambia’s vibrant economy, influenced significantly by copper mining, has often positioned the Kwacha as a currency that reflects changes in global copper prices.
