Did you know?

The Vietnamese Dong (VND) is one of the world’s least valuable currencies, but it holds a fascinating history. Introduced in 1946, the Dong replaced the French Indochinese piastre as Vietnam pursued monetary independence amid its struggles for national sovereignty. Vietnam has undergone several monetary reforms, most notably in 1985, when the new Dong replaced the old at a rate of 10 old Dong to 1 new Dong. This was a step to curtail hyperinflation, reflecting the country’s turbulent economic reforms known as “Đổi Mới” which began in 1986, transforming its economy from a centrally planned system to a socialist-oriented market economy.

An interesting fact about the VND is its vibrant banknotes, which feature rich cultural symbols and heroes from Vietnam’s storied past. These include images of the grand temple of literature, the effigy of Ho Chi Minh, and the iconic Ha Long Bay, showcasing the importance of national pride and identity interwoven into the daily transactions of Vietnamese citizens. This colorful representation serves as a reminder of Vietnam’s journey through its history of colonialization, war, unification, and economic resilience.
