Did you know?

The Swazi Lilangeni (SZL), introduced in 1974, is the official currency of Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland. Interestingly, it is pegged at par with the South African Rand, which is also legal tender in Eswatini. This close tie with the South African economy highlights Eswatini’s reliance on its larger neighbor for trade and infrastructure. Despite its small size, Eswatini boasts vibrant cultural traditions, and the lilangeni banknotes prominently feature these with images like the King, traditional ceremonies, and the country’s lush landscapes.

Eswatini’s monetary policy is closely linked to the Southern African Common Monetary Area, which includes South Africa, Namibia, and Lesotho. This agreement facilitates smoother trade within the region. Additionally, the plural form of lilangeni is emalangeni, a nod to the siSwati language, emphasizing the cultural heritage embedded in the currency. These unique aspects make the Swazi Lilangeni more than just a medium of exchange, but a reflection of the nation’s identity and history.
