The Maldivian Rufiyaa, abbreviated as MVR, derives its name from the Hindi word “rupiya,” which was used for silver coins in ancient times. Interestingly, the Rufiyaa is fairly young, officially introduced in 1981 to replace the Maldivian Rupee at par. Prior to the Rupee, the Maldives used cowrie shells and laari coins for transactions, showcasing a rich history of currency evolution influenced by the Maldives’ strategic position along important trade routes.

Further adding to its unique character, the Maldivian Rufiyaa features notes and coins that display vivid imagery of Maldivian culture, marine life, and natural beauty. Locals often use the floating decimal system, allowing for transactions as small as a Laari, which is 1/100th of a Rufiyaa, facilitating even the smallest purchases in this island nation.
