Did you know?

The Macedonian Denar (MKD) was introduced in 1992, following the independence of the Republic of North Macedonia. This replaced the Yugoslav Dinar as the official currency, marking a significant step in establishing the nation’s economic identity. The name “Denar” itself has historical roots, derived from the ancient Roman currency “denarius,” reflecting the region’s deep historical connections to Roman times.

What makes the Denar particularly unique is its continuous evolution in design and security features to enhance its authenticity and integrity. The banknotes are distinguished by notable designs such as the famous fresco from the 12th century “Holy Mother of God Peribleptos” Church and the remarkable “Plaošnik” archaeological site. These incorporate cultural and historical elements, providing a rich narrative of the country’s heritage and a vibrant illustration of its storied past.
