Did you know?

The Iraqi Dinar (IQD) carries a rich and complex history, intertwined with the country’s historical shifts. Introduced in 1932, the Dinar replaced the Indian Rupee that was used in British-controlled territories. What’s particularly fascinating is the banknote series featuring the likenesses of renowned historical figures and significant Iraqi landmarks, showcasing the nation’s pride and cultural heritage. Following the First Gulf War in the 1990s, the currency saw a major transformation when Iraq introduced the “Swiss Dinar,” named after the technology used to print the notes, to distinguish it from the future banknotes it planned to issue.

Post-2003, following monetary reforms after the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime, a new Dinar design was introduced to eliminate the influence of the previous currency linked with the fallen government. The redesigned banknotes symbolize Iraq’s resilience and transition towards economic recovery, featuring images representing Iraq’s rich cultural tapestry, such as the renowned Spiral Minaret of Samarra. Despite its tumultuous past, the Iraqi Dinar continues to be a symbol of national identity for the Iraqi people.
