Did you know?

The Gambian Dalasi, introduced in 1971, replaced the Gambian pound, making it one of the more youthful currencies in West Africa. Its name hails from the word “dala,” a local nickname for the five-franc coin used during colonial times, reflecting a blend of cultural heritage and modern economic aspirations. Unique among African currencies, the Dalasi bills feature a significant aspect of Gambian identity: the country’s rich wildlife. Each banknote showcases different species, like the elephant, the hippo, and the crocodile, symbolizing the nation’s commitment to conservation and its deep connection to the natural world.

One of the more fascinating aspects of the Dalasi is the fixed exchange rate it held against the Senegalese Franc until 1985 while maintaining independence. This was an economic strategy promoting stability and cooperation between The Gambia and its neighbor, Senegal, despite stark differences in size and economy. The design and history of the Dalasi encapsulate a proud and resilient spirit, mirroring the vibrancy and strength of the Gambian people.
