The Fijian Dollar (FJD) offers a unique insight into the history and culture of Fiji, as it’s one of the few currencies that celebrates the nation’s rich Indigenous heritage. First introduced in 1969, the FJD replaced the Fijian pound and since then, its banknotes have featured notable Fijian figures and culturally significant themes, like the stunning Fijian flora and fauna, and traditional ceremonial practices. One of the most iconic features is the depiction of the bila, a traditional kava bowl, symbolizing the deep-rooted social rituals involving kava, a traditional ceremonial beverage.

Interesting to note is the historical milestone when Fiji introduced its own series of polymer banknotes in 2013. These vibrant, colorful notes were designed to endure Fiji’s humid tropical climate better than paper versions. The polymer notes also reflect Fiji’s pride in its biodiversity, featuring striking images of its unique wildlife, such as the endemic bird species, the Fijian crested iguana, and the endemic Kadavu shining parrot, which only inhabit the secluded jungles of the Fijian islands.
