Did you know?

The Croatian Kuna, introduced in 1994, derives its name from the historical use of marten pelts as a medium of exchange during the medieval period in Croatia. This interesting etymology reflects the practice of using the valuable skins of the kuna (marten) animal in barter systems, dating back to the Roman and Croatian times, showcasing the region’s rich trading heritage. Before its introduction, Croatia used the Yugoslav dinar, making the Kuna a significant step towards economic sovereignty.

Despite its relatively short lifespan, the Kuna played a pivotal role in Croatia’s transition from a planned economy to a market-oriented one. As of January 2023, Croatia adopted the Euro as its official currency, marking the end of the Kuna era. Currency enthusiasts may find it appealing that the national symbol of a marten is displayed on the obverse side of the kuna coins, serving as a testament to its cultural and historical roots long after its use has ceased.
