Interestingly, the concept of a byte was coined by Werner Buchholz in 1956 during the early stages of computer design. Originally, a byte was not standardized at eight bits; it could vary, especially in older computer systems. Yet, today, the eight-bit byte is universally accepted, symbolizing a single character of text in most computing environments.

Bytes form the building blocks of digital information. It takes 1024 bytes to make a kilobyte, 1,048,576 to make a megabyte, and over a billion to compose a gigabyte.
